Parenting after divorce is a challenge

Just about every aspect of your life is going to change after you are divorced. One thing that is most certainly going to change is that you and your ex are going to have to parent your children together. This is going to be a challenge, but the rewards and benefits for the children are amazing when you can make this situation work.

If you and your ex are using the shared parenting method of child custody, you will have to work closely together to make sure that your children have what they need. This is where the challenge comes in. Obviously, you didn't get to the point of divorce because you work so well with your ex.

As you are working through the child custody matters that come up, you will need to remain respectful. Be sure that you remember your ex is still your child's parent. If you have to, you can treat this like a business arrangement. This might help you remain calm when things start to get tense. You also have the right to take a step back from the discussion for a while to sort things out.

Sometimes, there are matters that you and your ex will each feel strongly about. When these come up, you should make sure that you remain open to negotiations. You aren't always going to get your way and neither is your ex. By negotiating, you will likely find a middle ground that keeps your child's best interests at the heart of the matter. After all, that is the goal of the child custody case so don't lose sight of it when the going gets tough.
