Woman charged for driving drunk, causing fatal crash

A one-vehicle crash that occurred about 3:00 a.m., on Jan. 27 caused the deaths of two passengers. The driver of a Jeep Liberty was on Route 4 near Interstate 95 when she lost control of her car.

The 25-year-old woman crossed two lanes of traffic and smashed into a tree in the median. A man and woman in her vehicle were pronounced dead at the accident scene. Another passenger was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, but was later released.

According to police, the 25-year-old driver's blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was .21, which is almost three times the legal limit in Rhode Island, when she crashed the vehicle. She is now facing charges for driving under the influence resulting in death -- one count for each person killed.

The Rhode Island State Police reported that a warrant was issued for the woman. She surrendered at Wickford Barracks. She was expected to be arraigned the next day at the Third Division District Court.

Have you lost a loved one in a car crash that was caused by a reckless driver, such as one who was driving while intoxicated? A civil lawsuit can be filed against the driver for damages, including final expenses, pain and suffering and more. A criminal trial does not have to be successful in order for a civil trial to be successful. However, a conviction for drunk driving certainly won't hurt the civil case.

An attorney experienced in personal injury law can provide more information about civil lawsuits and how you can seek justice from the person responsible for your loved one's death.
