Ableism and disability discrimination at work may warrant lawsuit

As someone with a disability, you may consider your condition an important part of your identity. You may not feel as if you would be "normal" without your disability, and you have not allowed your disability to hold you back when it comes to living your life in the way you desire. Of course, despite your driven mindset, you likely understand that you cannot control the way in which other people view you.

Unfortunately, ableism is a common issue that many people with disabilities face, likely you included. Some people may not even realize that they are being ableist because they mistakenly believe that, as able-bodied people, they should always offer assistance to individuals with disabilities or simply believe that disabled parties cannot perform as well as abled-bodied individuals. While you may have found ways to deal with ableism in certain areas of your life, it may become more unfair when ableism leads to disability discrimination in the workplace.

Disability discrimination statistics

As mentioned, you likely have a strong and willful personality and want to do your best to achieve your career goals. Unfortunately, the mistaken ideas and illegal acts of others could possibly act as a roadblock on your path to success. You are not alone in this situation, and the following statistics may shed more light on the issue:

  • Reports indicate that over 13 million people have trouble finding employment due to their disabilities.
  • When it comes to unemployment, 70 percent of disabled individuals between the ages of 16 and 64 do not have jobs.
  • In 2017, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission indicated that nearly 27,000 charges of job bias in relation to disability occurred.
  • That same year, $135.2 million in awards from disability discrimination cases were obtained.
  • In terms of the visibility of disabilities, 88 percent are typically not visible.

Discrimination does not always mean that a potential employer does not hire a person due to his or her disability. This unfair treatment could also involve an employer or coworker ignoring a disability, making assumptions that a disabled person cannot complete a task, or otherwise mistreating or disrespecting a person due to a disability.

Fighting disability discrimination
