Tips for moving past the divorce when you have shared children

One of the most difficult things to do when you are going through a divorce is figuring out what your new relationship with your ex will be like. If you don't have children together, you can make a clean break and never have to deal with each other after the split. Things are a bit more complicated if you do have kids together because you will still remain in contact because of them.

It might be tempting to just fall back into old patterns of dealing with your ex, but this isn't a good idea. The old way of doing things is what led to your divorce, so avoid doing that. Plus, you don't have to do things just to pacify your ex now. You are your own person who is making their own way now.

Remember that you don't have to be friends with your ex, but you should have mutual respect. It might behoove you to think of your relationship as a business-like endeavor instead of something that is personal. Sometimes, this disassociation from your personal feelings can make the situation easier to deal with.

If you can, present a united front to the children. This might not always be easy. There will likely still be times when you don't fully agree with your ex, but unless the kids are being harmed, you shouldn't discuss the differences in front of the kids.

Over time, you will find that your relationship with your ex transforms. Hopefully, this is for the better. You might be able to settle into the new way of life by focusing on the children. Having a solid parenting plan and putting the end of the marriage behind you can help you with this.
